Jerrel Wilson
Punter
Career: 1963-1977
Induction: 1987
When the Kansas City Chiefs needed help after an unsuccessful offensive drive, they didn't call on Superman or Batman.
Those two super heroes were nothing compared to Thunderfoot. That was the nickname given to Jerrel Wilson, who starred for the Chiefs for 15 seasons, the longest career of any Chiefs player.
He's the punter all the rest are measured against. And really, the comparisons aren't fair because there was only one Jerrel Wilson.
He holds all-time records for most punts (1,014), highest punting average for a season (46.0) and highest average for a career (43.6).
He was a real show stopper whose booming punts would often leave an opponent grumbling about poor field position. Like a home run hitter; the Southern Mississippi product would wow the fans with a booming shot that seemed to escape the earth's atmosphere then dip down inside the 20-yard line.
He was named punter on the All-Time AFL All-Star team and was a Pro Bowl performer for three consecutive years, 1971-73.
Along with the Dawsons, Laniers, Bells, Buchanans, and Steneruds, you will find the name Wilson, who was the best at what he did for 15 years.
Today, he works for a boat company in Mountain Home, Arkansas. He enjoys listening to Willie Nelson and eating all the fish he catches and fries over an open camp fire.
